Brain Matters
Specialized Teaching and Learning Training
for Aviation Professionals
All aviation instructors are required to undergo comprehensive training in teaching and learning. We offer specialized training courses designed to meet the rigorous standards of both the industry and civil aviation authorities, specifically tailored for Approved Training Organizations (ATOs). Our team is composed of commercial pilots who have completed university-level coursework in psychology, cognitive science, or adult education, with all members holding either undergraduate or graduate-level academic credentials.
Our unique combination of extensive aviation experience and academic expertise enables us to teach instructors how to apply science-based methods in their own teaching. These methods are specifically adapted to the complexities of aviation operations. Our courses emphasize practical application in all aspects of aviation training, whether in the cockpit, simulator, or classroom.

Our Courses:
Teaching & Learning for SFI/TRI
We can assist your ATO in making SFI/TRI upgrades possible. We deliver the EASA-mandated Teaching & Learning training required for airline pilots looking to become instructors.
Teaching & Learning for FI
All applicants for an EASA Flight Instructor rating must undergo training in Teaching & Learning. We can assist your ATO in bringing a qualitative course to your FI-course, meeting EASA-standards and requirements.
Instructor Seminar Presentations
Are you planning to conduct instructor refresher training? We can conduct part of or a full event. Our presentations on learning psychology provide interesting content which is also acceptable to the authorities.
Scheduling Department Training
Managing a complex training organization can be a difficult challenge in compromise. We can minimize delays and costs caused by training difficulties by giving your scheduling department new insights into the learning process.
What we do
At Brain Matters, our mission is to empower aviation instructors with a deep understanding of the science behind human learning systems. Traditionally, teaching and learning training has often relied on the repetition of established doctrines. We take a different approach by analyzing the learning process itself, with a focus on the brain systems that drive all human learning. Our courses place special emphasis on the unique capabilities and limitations of these brain structures in the context of aviation.
We present this scientific knowledge with the practical needs of aviation instruction in mind. For example, did you know that the human brain contains a system capable of mentally rehearsing hand and feet coordination, which activates when a student observes a maneuver being demonstrated? Contrary to common belief, demonstrations can sometimes be more effective than self-practice.
Our courses equip aviation professionals with the knowledge required to plan, conduct, and sustain high-quality, efficient aviation training programs. All our offerings comply with the standards outlined in EASA Air Crew FCL.920, applicable to the initial issuance of various aviation instructor licenses (e.g., FI/TRI/SFI/MCCI).
What is Brain Matters?
Brain Matters is a Swedish company founded in 2019 by airline pilot and psychology undergraduate Martin Trankell. Our core mission is to integrate the practical experience of commercial piloting and flight instruction with advanced academic knowledge in learning psychology. Every member of our training team holds or has held a commercial pilot’s license, and each has dedicated several years to studying psychology at the university level.
Where do we train?
We offer training either on-site at your location or in Stockholm, Sweden. In Stockholm, we typically conduct sessions at the Clarion Hotel Arlanda Airport or at another convenient venue tailored to the needs of our students and clients.
